Welcome to the SuperVegan forum. We're glad to have you!
I'm Laura. I do technical stuff, and blog... occasionally.
How about you? Here's the place to introduce yourself. Why did you go vegan? What's your favorite restaurant? Do you participate in the vegan community? Why is SuperVegan awesome? (Okay, okay, you can skip that last one... )
Or just share anything that you think we should know! |

Hello, My name is Kristy. I have been a vegetarian for a decade now, and a vegan for 7 months. I started mainly for environmental reasons, although animal rights is also an issue I support. I live in Philadelphia and I love Govinda's vegetarian to go, Horizons, and all my favorite falafel carts. I occasionally post in a blog http://www.veganphilly.blogspot.com/
although I haven't in a while. I read Supervegan everyday, and it really is quite super! |

Hi, I'm Olivia and despite bring a co-founder of this site, I spend most of my life very offline. Still, I'm interested in meeting folks who read SuperVegan cuz I'm sure you are all really different and fun. I look forward to chiming in here every so often--though mostly I'll be a voyeur (sp?) visiting monthly like your Aunt Flo.
I'm a temporary corporate whore and a permanent free spirit. A few of my fave things in life are cats, parakeets, daydreams, and giggles. I hate when people get all high horsey. Um, I could go on forever but I guess that'e enough for now. Oh, I belong to a kick-ass CSA here in Bed-Stuy, Bklyn: http://bedstuycsa.wetpaint.com You can read my personal exploits in my online diary: http://oliviashakesthingsup.blogspot.com. I haven't updated it in a while, but it should give you an idea of me. |

| I'm Susie, your mostly friendly managing editor and blogging machine (http://www.susiecagle.com/blog). My favorite drink is gin & ginger ale with a squeeze of lime, my favorite sport is trapeze and my favorite temperature is 78 degrees Fahrenheit. I hate Kate's Joint despite their newly painted interior. And I totally love SuperVegan omgzlol. |

| I'm Kimberly, I live in Sweden. I just joined SV I been vegan for almost a year and it was the next logical step after a vegetarian since 2004. I became vegetarian for health reasons but not for the more common reason that a vegetarian diet is healthier but as a way to beat my eating disorder by taking charge of my eating and making "friends" with the food again wrapt up in that reason is the ethical and environmental reasons. It worked well and don't have to struggle with every meal any more. I live with my omni bonus sister and our cat. I love cats, reading and almost everything that involves a computer. I'm a member of vegpeople.com where I also found the link here. Next time I get money I will pay the membership fee in the vegan society in Sweden. |

My name is Gordon. I've been off and on (mostly on) lacto-ovo vegetarian most of my life (I'm 39). But in the past couple years, my teenagers have been requesting meat. So, for most of 2006 we went back to basic meat eating a couple times a month.
But in December or January, I really started thinking a lot about it, prompted by a couple programs I heard on NPR regarding the animal meat/dairy industries. I realized that I just didn't want to support that largely invisible but massive wave of institutionalized cruelty to animals. So, although I've been vegetarian for many years, as I said off and on, I've been vegan for oh, about 6 months now. I like it. I do have some concern regarding any nutritional pitfalls I should look out for, as I haven't evaluated that at all.
In addition to my longstanding vegetarianism and new veganism, I also strive to eat whole foods (tempeh over tofu, brown over white rice), locally grown foods, and food from small vs large corporate businesses. These all seem like interconnected values to me. I also prefer organic food, but would rather eat conventional whole food grown at a farm near me than, say, organically grown white flour products grown and produced in other states or other countries far from me.
SuperVegan seems like a great site, and I look forward to both participating and having it help me be vegan as productively and pleasurably as possible.
I'm a medical editor in Eugene, Oregon and love music ranging from punk to techno/trance to bluegrass to ambient to metal to electronica to jambands to reggae to folk to new wave. Happily married to an "omni" who is very tolerant and supportive of my veganism. Oh, and I've never been to NYC. Seems like a lot of this site is NYC based or focused. |

Well, I'm also a refugee from VeganPorn, although I've been here nearly as long as I was there. I've written several restaurant reviews here, dating back to 2006.
Certain people (who shall be nameless, Jason and beforewisdom) belittle the phenomenon of being uprooted from an internet community, but it's become increasingly problematic in this day and age. It's impossible not to become attached to a virtual home where you spend time and feel comfortable, so when that place vaporizes or changes, it's natural to feel disoriented.
I'm glad people are settling here, and I'm likely to spend more time here and write more reviews. And I still have a crush on BigJames. |

Hi! I am a mom of vegan son. I have been trying desperately to find healthy, yummy foods for my newly vegan son and I have got to tell you that even though I have seen the horrible abuse photos to animals, that I am so much more interested in legislation and work than deprivation. I am so depressed because I feel like I am embarking on a lifestyle of how to eat fake food - fake sour cream, fake milk, fake cheese...Even though we do eat our veggies, soy protein, fruit and nuts. Coming from a Presbyterian background - that God bestowed many blessings to us in food, wine, marriage, sex ...and that any of these can be abused or treasured as gifts in the right context - this is such a stretch for me, although I am trying to be helpful and respectful of his new vegan values.
I am afraid that much of his sudden vegan outrage has so much to do with some personal issues .. and that this is a way to control "something" vs feeling so out of control in other areas of his life. Also, concerned for isolating himself - since this is so not the norm in this part of the world.
What my question is - why is this catching on when there could be such a wonderful revival of home spun farming done in more humane ways than ever before?
Also, and more importantly, my son, who is a senior this year, has already lost 10 lbs in 2 months and now weighs 163. I am fearful for him.
Any thoughts? |

Hi Momofveganson, and welcome!
How tall is your boy? 163lbs for an 18 year old doesn't sound so bad. (But eating a well-balanced diet is important. It's entirely possible to be a junk food vegan, so make sure he and the rest of your family are getting enough fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, etc.)
Ask yourself this - what is "real" about dairy cheese or sour cream? These are highly processed products. You're just used to them as being "normal." (And there's not much healthy about these anyway - any weight you'd lose from dropping dairy is weight you want to lose!) Soy milk has been drunk for thousands of years; there's nothing fake about that even if it's new to you. There is plenty of "fake" vegan food, just as there's plenty of "fake" non-vegan food.
As vegans, we don't really believe that "humane" farming is humane as long as it still involves the exploitation and killing of animals. I agree that a revival in small, organic farms would be wonderful, but the government has worked pretty hard against this ... talk to your legislators about the Farm Bill! |

Depends on what part of the world you're in; many US cities have thriving vegan communities. If he's in college, a lot of schools have vegan societies and meetup groups that go out to enjoy a vegan dinner. Is he really so "strange" that he has no peers who are also getting into veganism?

I think a lot of people aren't ready to raise a cow from a calf in their backyard and then slaughter it at home, especially if the cow is named and becomes a pet. Plus, there are still zoning regulations to get around. There is a "Real Food" movement going on, just as there is an increase lately in the number of vegans. (Actually, there are always people trying veganism and then quitting; the number of vegans seems to always hover between 2 and 3 percent.)
People are doing a lot of organic gardening at home, however, and enjoying a diverse array of fresh fruits and vegetables they might not otherwise have had.

It would help me to know how tall he is; if he's 5'10", 163 doesn't sound dangerously underweight; even if he's 6'4", it sounds like he's still in the ballpark. Eliminating animal products from one's diet brings about metabolic changes; it's possible to gain weight or stay the same when one adopts a vegan diet, but people usually are happy to drop some unwanted pounds. I also don't think this trend will continue; eventually his weight loss might level off and even increase. At 18 your son has a faster metabolism than when he'll be 30.
I wish I had been headstrong enough as a teenager to follow my instincts and stop eating animals, but it took me until I was 39 to take the plunge. If your son is getting the basic nutrients he needs, you probably don't have to worry about him having a cheeseburger-and-fries deficiency. |
